Hide and Seek

Belligerent yelling stained our walls.

Secrets became excuses every day.

I would hide, right here, when I heard their calls.

Were they in the kitchen—

or are they upstairs?

Who cares? I had to stay hidden.

Mommy would scream

and daddy would push me—by accident.

Maybe this was all a dream.

Don’t say a word or they’ll hear you.

I know it’s scary but we’ll okay—I promise.

I just wish people knew what we go through.
